Chemakum is a Native American tribe who inhabited the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Synonyms for the word Chemakum include the Chemeketa, Chimakum, and Chimacum. These terms are often used interchangeably to refer to the same group of people. The Chemakum language is part of the Chimakuan language family, which also includes the Quileute and the Pekhekshe languages. Today, there are no known speakers of the Chemakum language, as the last native speaker, Mattie Gunterman, passed away in 1939. However, efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize the language through language revival programs and documentation.
