Alocasia is a genus of plants also known as elephant ears or African masks. Synonyms for this word include taro, Colocasia, Xanthosoma, and Caladium. Taro is from the same family as alocasia and is also commonly referred to as elephant ear due to the shape of its leaves. Colocasia is another genus of plants that closely resemble alocasia, Xanthosoma is yet another genus with similar leaves. Caladium, however, is not in the same family as alocasia but is often confused due to their similar foliage patterns.
