Stolons are horizontal stems or runners that emerge from the base of the plant, and grow up and outward from the parent plant. They have nodes, from which roots and shoots grow, allowing the plant to reproduce asexually. Stolons have numerous synonyms depending on the plant species. They can be referred to as runners, propagules, sprouts, offshoots, runners, or creepers. Stolons also play a vital role in improving soil structure by creating a network of roots spreading outwards, enabling the plant to take advantage of new nutrients and water available in the soil. They are a common feature in plants such as strawberries, mint, and spider plants.
