The Family Proteidae is a group of salamanders that are commonly referred to as "waterdogs" or "mudpuppies". Other slang names for these aquatic amphibians include "water puppies" and "mud eels". The Proteidae family includes five different genera: Necturus, Proteus, Lissotriton, Laotriton, and Paralichthys.
